(CHRISTMAS) BAKING. I'm finding it impossible to get in the Christmas mood, despite 10000x different 'Last Christmas' covers (including Vietnamese version) running on repeat at the electronics shop across the street, mixed with the occasional Justin Bieber - Baby, of course. Yesterday, I did some Christmas baking to kick-start some Weihnachtstimmung, did not help much, but was fun nevertheless. :) after that I got a massage and now am heading to the gym. Yesterday night Kimi landed, this afternoon Sabrina lands in HCMC and then tonight Laszlo, needless to say I am beyond excited. :)

still alive
STILL ALIVE. Sveja arises from the dead... Sorry for the short break from posting, I kept forgetting to take my camera with me so I had nothing to share and truth be told I have not been doing anything extra-ordinarily exciting either. Today I went to breakfast with Daddy, Om Hau, my granduncle second or third, and his niece, who would then be my cousin second or third degree? The Vietnamese extended family tree can be so confusing... :) then gym, then lunch with my aunt, shopping at Saigon Square and then I brought baby Victoria to ballet class, which was just beyond cute and amusing. Just got back from dinner with Dad (guess where, surprise, surprise), just wanted to share pictures from today before heading to snooze-land.

today we...
TODAY WE... Discovered the cutest little coffee place in all of Saigon: L'Usine. It's super cute, right in the middle of town, but super hidden and secluded from the busiest of it all. There's cute cupcakes and quiche and baguettes, and, and, and. I cannot really say how to food is, only had a blueberry banana muffin, which was really good. My hot chocolate was underwhelming, had to add sugar and I'm actually anti-ueber-sweet, but the whole vibe of the place was just nice to sit and read and watch other people come and go... (+ no Christmas music and only classy, modest Christmas decoration, always a plus in my book! :)).

sushi and sleep
SUSHI AND SLEEP. Just had a lot of the former and hopefully will be getting a lot of the latter tonight. I could not be more exhausted. Today was gym-day and I for some reason set my mind on running an hour instead of 40 minutes (7.5km, making progress, majulah! :)), which was surprisingly doable, but because we had a late breakfast ('late' being 10am, Vietnamese people are definitely early birds), we went to the gym around 1pm and then decided to skip lunch and just wait for dinner time. I was hence near-death when we reached Sushi Bar. There we were greeted by the typical yelling of Japanese greetings from all corners of the restaurant (coming from Vietnamese people) - hungry and tired this was more annoying than usual. No Christmas music, but little plastic trees on each table and everyone wearing silly Santa hats... It's 30 degrees outside people! Stop faking Christmas spirit! Oh well... I love me some edamame, cannot say no to that, even if it means high irritation levels. :)

fast forward
FAST FORWARD. Scusi, ze internet has been down the last few days. Right now sitting in Dad's office, I've been given my own little desk, so I'm feeling very important. :) in an attempt to get back on track with my posts, here are many multiple days squeezed into one post. Not much has happened so far though, except a lot of eating. Also, Daddy and I have been 'hitting the gym' haha oh yeah GTL, baby! Minus the tanning, and Ba Noi does my laundry... Anyways, surprisingly I am not doing so bad (5km in 40 minutes, slow, but hey... It's nevertheless an achievement, I've never managed to run so long :)). God bless Nicki Minaj for helping me get through it... I fear every minute that goes by though, knowing that when the day ends and I wake up tomorrow, I will be as sore as never before...

sofitel
SOFITEL. As many of you may have already noticed, Daddy and I share a uncontrollable passion for food, and boy was I starving getting off the plane (at this point I have to mention, TigerAirways: best Asian budget airline by far, AirAsia: I despise you)... It's this big thing in Vietnam now to have membership cards for places, Dad's wallet is filled to the brim with them, with the newest addition being Accor, so we decided to have dinner at the Sofitel. At first I thought I had never been there, walking in I directly realized the big wooden pillars and remembered having been there for New Years once with the fam and Kimihide's family too. A lot of things are changing in Asia, so it's always nice to walk into a familiar place... :)

bloodbuzz
BLOODBUZZ. Landed in Vietnam safely yesterday and already have a few pictures to share, but first I want to talk about an event I went to right before leaving Singapore. A few weeks ago I was e-mailed to come see the full winter collection for Bloodbuzz, a new Singaporean-based fashion brand, the one from which I got all my Zouk flea market purchases, so naturally I was super excited and made sure to draw a bit of cash from the ATM before heading there (ok, maybe I drew a little more than just 'a bit' of cash... :)). It was a perfect way to spend a rainy Saturday, there was a free flow of wine, a photobooth, free nail art, cupcakes and lots of other yummy nibbles, all under the theme of "London Calling" (the designer Kimberly is a recent LCF graduate). I loved a lot of the things I saw and ended up placing two orders that arrived at my doorstep the next day (now that is what I call service :)). No doubt in my mind that my new buys will show up on the blog soon, for now here are the pictures from the showing.

brb
BRB. Sitting in my now empty room with my suitcase (and other bags, feel free to call me queen of overpacking)... Oh beloved Singapura... I cannot put into words how sad I am to be leaving. I've grown so fond of the city, the modernity meets nature feel of this place, the people, the food (!!!)... I've really come to cherish Singapore, all of it, even the flaws can be so endearing (population moves in slow-motion, population does not let one get out of the metro before they attempt to squeeze themselves in, and so on). I think having moved so much as a child has led me to feel at home in new places very fast: I truly feel I'm leaving home, saying goodbye to such a wonderful and enriching experience. I could not have wished for a better host country for my exchange. Majulah Singapura, I will be back soon. :)

mermaid + lion
MERMAID + LION. A day at Sentosa, running on 5 hours of sleep, Bianca and I zombied through the aquarium, got the mandatory Merlion photo and then ditched as fast as the wind for surpriseeeeee Din Tai Fung (what to do when a dim sum craving comes along in Europe?) and a well-deserved nap afterwards... Ok, fine, whatever, only I napped...

drinkage local style
DRINKAGE LOCAL STYLE. For some reason, I love the blurriness of this picture... :) last Wednesday, Han Loong took us out for North Indian food (yuuuuum) and after that to Butterfactory, where I had already been with my Maastricht friends, but that night was super local, hardly any foreigners and boy oh boy, after 6 months in Asia I can definitely confirm that Asians cannot, I repeat cannot, hold their liquor at all and fail at practicing self-control (tut tut tut), because comes midnight they all start passing out and getting super sloppy, it's an amusing though sometimes perplexing and even disgusting sight... Oh well, "embracing foreign cultures" 2.0, I guess... :)

bali: part III
BALI: PART III. First December post, time flies by so fast, only 5 more days until I leave Singapore for good... Bianca is here at the moment so we've been exploring Singapore (I realize now just how little I've actually seen haha sad). For now though, here are the pictures still left over from our last day in Bali: chilled day at the beach, then pool, then dinner in Seminyak. And then waking up at 3am to get our flight, eeeeek.

bali: part II
BALI: PART II. Our third day in Bali was spent in Ubud, a wee bit up north from Canggu. There's quite a bit to see there, so it's also a little more touristy, but still not overrun like Seminyak or Kuta. We rented a driver for the day and started at the rice field terraces, then we headed to the monkey forest (where we witnessed a monkey rape), the Goa temple and the Batur Mt. volcano. We also stopped at a plantation farm thing, where they among other things produce luwat coffee beans, which are coffee beans eaten and then pooped out by these ferret-looking animals, it's suppose to be yum yum, but I prefer not to consume things that have come out of a butthole, thank you.

bali: part I
BALI: PART I. Oh snap, guess who's back? Bali was a dream, much more exotic than I had expected. The day before jetting off I found a super affordable room in an amazing villa in Canggu, which is north of Seminyak and Kuta, the party areas, so it's more quiet and not very touristy at all (God bless Airbnb). The foreigners you do meet actually live in Canggu or like us do not want to get caught in the touristy hustle and bustle that Bali can be. We rented scooters, we ate a lot, we met some really great people and basically just did whatever we felt like doing...Sooo relaxing... Oh Bali... Aku cinta kamu. ♥

adios amigos
ADIOS AMIGOS. Off to Bali for some Eat, Pray, Love inspired days with my buddy-buddy Sabrina, back on Tuesday. Have I ever read Eat, Pray, Love? No. But Sabrina sums it up as finding oneself and I desperately need a getaway to just breathe, relax and soak up some sun (weather forecast: sunny, 30 degrees, thank you Indonesia!). I feel like the last few weeks have been so busy and intense and monsoon season can be so depressing. Sunshine, here we come! :)

gueven: day 2
GUEVEN: DAY 2. On the second day, we slept in and then it rained and rained, so we were confined to the apartment for a bit, then we headed downtown to Maxwell Food Center, another hawker, again for chicken rice, so good. Then I showed Gueven Marina Bay, where it started raining so badly once again, my feet were soaked! Then we got home, changed and headed to dinner at my faaaaavorite, Din Tai Fung (it never gets old!!!), with Maurice, Sabrina and William, and then Cold Stone. Then Sabrina and I showed Gueven Clark Quay, a bar/club area and theeeen we headed home for a good night's rest (Gueven is zzZzzZz as I prewrite this post :)).
23 November, 2011
gueven: day 1
GUEVEN: DAY 1. After my last exam I had lunch with some friends and then rushed home to tidy up my room before heading to the airport to pick up Gueven. We then had dinner at a food hawker Holland Village, yumming chicken rice, nasi lemak and fried carrot cake, so good. Then we went for drinks at the university bar, since it was Joel's birthday the next day and I would not be seeing a lot of my Maastricht friends anymore, since they all leave to wherever soon. Such a long day that for once I was glad to fall into my bed, despite its flintstone hardness.

maastricht meets rotterdam
MAASTRICHT MEETS ROTTERDAM. Last Wednesday night (I so thought of copy pasting in Katy Perry lyrics, but refrained, I'm not thaaaaat lame!), I went out to Le Baroque at Chijmes and Butterfactory with some friends from Maastricht, who are also on exchange here. One of my last ladies nights in Singapore, I feel a teardrop coming. :) the majority of the photos turned out pretty ridiculous, I just wanted to especially share this shot of the full moon on Marina Bay (blurry, because taken at night with no tripod by my little camera). Exam tomorrow, after which Gueven touches down on Singaporean soil, then Bali and then Bianca visits and then I'm already off to Vietnam, last stop before heading back to Europe, ahhhhh. Time flies by way too fast.

blogger's depression
BLOGGER'S DEPRESSION. I've been suffering from a blogger's depression lately, just have not felt like posting anything at all. Maybe it's the upcoming exam that I have not studied for yet or the fact that my Essie good to go! is empty or it's the monsoon grey that rolls of Singapore every day, which, don't get me wrong I still prefer to a cold, wet, mushy Rotterdam winter, can still be so depressing. I don't know, but in an attempt to shake it off, here is my first post in a while!
I had a great and refreshing weekend with Hong Ha, who stopped over Singapore for 3 days, and Bac Khue, who joined us on Saturday, both left last night. It's always to nice to spend time with family, especially when you're away from home, and with "home" I do not even know which place I actually mean. :) today is laundry and study day (it's almost 5pm and I have not studied nor done the laundry yet...), monsoon downpour just commenced, frustrating... Perfect weather for blogging though, so here are the pictures from the weekend, 3 days squeezed into one post, ready, set, go!

yellow diamonds in the light
YELLOW DIAMONDS IN THE LIGHT. Obsessed with my new knit, seriously... Wearing it as I type... Oh goodness, I foresee another rehab intervention situation coming up (white lace top, I miss you!). Anyways... It's been such a loooong and tiring day, consisting mostly of indulging in Indian food, claypot, a waffle, a lot of iced Milo and Asia Pacific Business Environment, spot the mistake. No fun. But I did come home to this wonderful sunset outside my window, so it kind of makes up for the uneventful day (and the extensive monsoon rain). Off to bed now, good night world! :)
zouk flea market
ZOUK FLEA MARKET. I had heard about the Zouk flea market months ago, but found no dates as to when it would be. It's only held once every six months or so, so I was ecstatic when I by random found out it would be this Sunday. Basically its a flea market for charity in one of the most well-known clubs in Singapore, but actually its more like a epiphany of Asian hipster, with everyone being oh-so-cool with their thrifted maxi skirts, non-prescription glasses and lime green men's shoes. Haha either way, when we were about to leave my eye caught this amazing knit (subsequently caught by an amazing cardigan, and then a necklace), and I tried, but could not fight it, I had to get it all (Maurice was no help in all of this, but more of an instigator)... Ayo, I do not know how to get this all in my suitcase and back to Europe...

national museum
NATIONAL MUSEUM. Friday. Actually planned on botanic gardens, but monsoon downpour made it impossible to get anywhere dry, so museum day it was, followed by my favorite, Din Tai Fung, dim sum heaven. Then a Cold Stone Chocolate Devotion, disgustingly good. And finally, vino by the Singapore River. Oh boy... Credit card bill, go easy on me...
lightroom
LIGHTROOM. Woke up early this morning for an Adobe Lightroom introduction course. Needless to say, I was utterly confused and very lost. Playing around with it a little at the moment, and I must say I am surprised at how much you can change a picture (quite sad what photography has really come to: edit, edit, edit), but I cannot seem to get it just right yet... Ayo... Pictures from the National Museum yesterday to be posted soon, need to direct my full attention to Modern Family my group project first. :)

scariest place you'll ever be
SCARIEST PLACE YOU'LL EVER BE. With recess week coming up and no more classes (had an oral test this morning and have an exam coming up November 22nd), I am taking advantage of my last free days in Singapore to explore. I realized I moved to Singapore and just started living, and never really went through the whole tourist experience, my goodness do I have a lot to catch up on before I leave. So, first stop: Haw Par Villa, which, as the title already says, definitely is the scariest place you'll ever be. It's actually a "theme park" but not a la Sentosa or Universal Studios, it's a Chinese mythological theme park... It was founded by two brothers, the founders of Tiger Balm actually, since they felt Singapore was becoming too amoral. Wikipedia calls it "a venue for teaching traditional Chinese value". I just think it's terrifyingly scary and very, very weird.

BITS AND BOBS. As my time in Singapore comes to an end, here are some of the actually rather unexciting pictures taken by my Blackberry during the exchange (I feel like lazy hari raya day justifies quickly just posting a pre-written entry). Pictures from KL to come once I have compiled mine with Sabrina's, who has already posted some here.

fantabulous: part uno!
FANTABULOUS: PART UNO! ArtScience Museum in Marina Bay, one of the highlights of my time in Singapore. Titantic and Dali, the best exhibitions I have ever been to, really amazing and the architecture of the museum is just surreal, as is all of Marina Bay actually. One of the best days so far in Singapore, also because of dim sum lunch at Din Tai Fung before the museum, Marina Bay water show and Mexican dinner at Clarke Quay afterwards. Love, love love, or as YeiJi would say, fantabulous.

sling when you're winning
SLING WHEN YOU'RE WINNING. Finally, we made it to Raffles Hotel for authentic Singapore Slings! Hmm... Overrated much? But still good. :) if you're wondering why I am sporting such a pain-stricken faced, last picture, these shoes were most definitely not made for walking... Either way, after Raffles Hotel we headed to Helipad, a huge helipad in the middle of downtown Singapore (no pictures sadly). Overlooking the beautifully lit up city, Sabrina and I could not help but feel extremely sad that our time here is almost up, but also very, very thankful for the experience. Oh Singapura, you will be missed....

1, 2, whoop whoop.
1, 2, WHOOP WHOOP. Just got back from Steve Aoki, actually the only DJ I have ever really dreamed about seeing live some day, soooo mission complete. :) now off to get some well-deserved 4 hours of sleep (group meeting at 10am for university project on a Saturday, so cruel...).
botanic garden by night
BOTANIC GARDEN BY NIGHT. Pictures are piling in now that my laptop is working again (still feels surreal!!!). Here are the 6 pictures that didn't turned out completely blurry and horrible (out of a gazillion taken) when I went to the botanic gardens to practice shooting at night using manual mode (fail... :)). The pictures, especially the last few, are for some reason super hazy. I signed up for an Adobe Lightroom workshop in mid-November so maybe I'll learn to correct the haze there. Or I'll just have to learn to take not-hazy pictures. :)

moon cake testing
MOON CAKE TESTING. I just realized I never shared these pictures, probably because I was trying to forgot the queasy feeling that marked that day (I'm probably only sharing them right now, because I am jumping of joy that I have my laptop back and all my data safe and sound on an external harddisk now :)). Seriously, these pictures are soooo old... But anywho, moon cake testing... After trying moon cakes of all shapes and sizes (and they are generally not my thing to begin with), my insides were not feeling so well. It was amazing though to see the moon cake making process and it was nice to see Sabrina, moon cake and lotus/yam paste obsessed, in her own personal paradise. Like a child at Toys 'R' Us. :)

cham charm
CHAM CHARM. Currently extremely sick in bed. Yesterday was really bad, so I couldn't post anything, but I'm feeling a bit more alive today. Spent the whole day sleeping, the 5 different pills I've been prescribed basically just knock me out within 5 minutes. Had an in credible raving for cookies around 10pm, so I went down to go get some, only to faint (managed to purchase the cookies before though, win) and have a gazillion very helpful people drag me back to bed (thank you to everyone who helped, do not recall any faces, but I am very thankful :)).
So anyways, back to posting. These pictures are from Saturday dinner at possibly the most beautiful restaurants I've ever dined it. The place was great, located in a very new area of Ho Chi Minh (had never been there before, all surrounding buildings seemed very modern and new)... And of course I was just overly ecstatic to be seeing aunt, uncle and the cousins again! They grow up so fast. :) after dinner (culinary highlight: lobster) we took a tour of the restaurant, which is huge. Multiple stories and so much attention to detail... Definitely worth a revisit.

pummeluff
PUMMELUFF. Quick shot of me before heading out to dinner last night, which was absolutely amazing (cam on Bac Khue va Co Nu rat nhieu :)). The awkward pose was brought about by a lack of brain space left to focus on looking normal, too busy sucking it all in for dear life haha oh goodness. Currently shaking off my sleepy face, drinking freshly squeezed orange juice (Ba Noi pampers and spoils me), getting ready to head out for pho24. More photos of my Saigon weekend coming soon. Vaio is more powerful than ever, yeeees!

daddy daughter favorite past time
DADDY DAUGHTER FAVORITE PAST TIME. The apple definitely does not fall far from the tree. So yes, if by now you are getting the feeling that my days here are basically compose of eating, well observed. Off to the Sheraton in an hour for further stuffing of the face with uncle, auntie and little cousins. It's the cherry on top for a magnificent day: just got back from a 5 Euro mani+pedi (do I really need to further elaborate on why I love Saigon? Really?) to be welcomed by my happily running Vaio.
Let me repeat: happily, perfectly running Vaio!!! Baby Vaio decided to begin breathing at ridiculous volume levels about 6 months after its purchase so the lack of brum brum bruuuum right now is surreal. The from now on forever cherished computer man built in a fan that runs 24/7, so baby Vaio is constantly blowing out nice, cool air (silently!) and will hopefully refrain from overheating for a while. And this all for 35 Euros. I am beyond ecstatic.

did you know...
DID YOU KNOW... Fun(ny) fact of the day! Oh yeeees, pun intended! Dinner with Daddy oi (currently kicking my heels up on a much craved for weekend getaway to Saigon) alias slinging back ridiculous amounts of sushi, tea and Japanese beer for less than 15 Euros. Saigon, I love you unconditionally.

happy thanksgiving!
HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Last Sunday, lovely Alex invited me to celebrate Canadian thanksgiving with some friends. Since we don't have our own kitchens (or any kitchen appliances, or plates, or sufficient cups, cutlery, or anything as a matter of fact), we really had to improvise (and steal a lot). We cooked a whole turkey with stuffing (turkey met the oven at 11am, after its butt met my hand and I pulled out all of its lovely insides, yum, and left the oven at 6pm) and roast potatoes, carrots, mashed potatoes (mashed with a fork :)) and peas and cranberry jelly and sinful apple crumble for dessert! Fattie feast!!!

story of my life
STORY OF MY LIFE. Quick post before wizzing out the door for Indian dinner downtown (samosas, gimme, gimme :)). Looking for a picture to grace this post, I found this and it just cracked me up haha, I love it. My data recovery was successful (and expensive if I may add). From now on, I will compulsively back up everything on my new (and expensive if I may add) external hard disk. Conclusion of the day is that buying an expensive Sony Vaio resulting in having to pay an expensive repair after only one year and then pay an expensive data recovery after a second break down was not a good idea. Lesson learnt.
Off to Saigon this weekend. Intensive Vietnamese practicing (and hopefully a new laptop) await.

kuching: day 3, part II
KUCHING: DAY 3, PART II. After visiting my orang utan friends on our last day in Kuching, we headed to a crocodile farm to experience some fierce schni-schna-schnappi feeding. These are the last pictures from the Kuching trip... :(
I feel horrible about the lack of posts, but laptop remains unrepairable, and it's mid-term time, so not very many exciting things to take pictures of anyways.... But, heading to Saigon next weekend and will be coming back with a lot of pictures and my hopefully rejuvinated currently most-hated object in the world or a replacement.

kuching: day 3, part I
KUCHING: DAY 3. Orang utans!!! Woke up at the crack of dawn to head to the Semmengoh Rehabilitation Center. Upon arrival we were told that yesterday a feeder was attacked, great, best greeting ever, good morning to you too. After seeing orang utans, we headed to a crocodile farm. Photos will be posted in a separate post. This one is dedicated fully to my faaaaavorite monkey species! :)

kuching: day 2
KUCHING: DAY 2. Bako National Park. Picture the most unsporty person ever treking 6km through the jungle to the very tip top of the island Bako is located on. Already just getting onto the island was an adventure. Picture a little itty bitty boat, looks like it was glued together with UHU, and the lowest tide you can imagine, and the most dodgy looking water ever, and my freshly pedicured feet and then "I'm sorry, the tide is too low, I can't take you all the way to the shore, but why don't you just get out here in the middle of the sea and walk to the island through this wonderfully brown water? Is that something you'd be interested in?". Delish. I was not amused.... The view at the top was such a treat though, the trek was also super interesting, because one minute you were walking on white sand, the next on slimey leaves, then on the most interesting rock formations... And we saw endangered proboscis monkeys (ugliest creatures to walk the planet), so it was all definitely worth it in the end. The day was ended with a local food court across the river (this again involved a UHU-glued-together boat :)).

kuching: day 1
KUCHING: DAY 1. Finaaaally, I can post some new pictures, am currently working from a borrowed laptop (thank you Sabrina :)). The first day in Kuching was spent wandering around town. We arrived at our hostel, Lodge 121 (best hostel ever), at around 5pm, and since budget airline means no food, we were all pretty starving. This called for major seafood fattie-fest for super little cash, a dream come true. :)
I was travelling with buddy-buddy Sabrina and Maurice, a friend from Rotterdam, who I actually had never even talked to before coming to Singapore. :) as you can see, we had a really great time, the whole trip was like a constant laughing-streak. Next trio adventure: Kuala Lumpur in November. :)

DEAR VAIO. Vaio, we could have been so great together, but instead you go and disappoint me. Laptop is not fixable, limited posts until replacement can be purchased.
P.S. Kuching was amazing! Photos will be uploaded as soon as possible. Some can be found on Sabrina's blog.

NOSTALGIA: ANTWERPEN. Oldies, but goldies. Just thought I'd share my favorite pictures from Antwerpen, a little getaway trip done with le boyfriend before zipping off to Singapore. So technically, the photos aren't even that old. Nevertheless, pure gold. :)
